Each day I would come home from high school with my mom, she would always ask, “how was school?” Being a typical high school boy, I almost always responded, “good,” and tried to leave the conversation there. However, my mom would always try to learn more, asking me other questions to try and see how my day really went. She didn’t do this to pester me or annoy me, no, she did it because when you love someone you want to get to know them, even if you can’t understand it all.

Today is the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, where we dive deep into coming to know God himself, God who is by his very nature infinite and mysterious, who by definition is inaccessible to know in his entirety for our finite human minds. Oof. Why should we try to even understand the Trinity? Would it not be easier to just chalk it up to saying, “God is a mystery,” and leave it at that? Easier, yes. But it would also be easier not to try and understand the life of a high school boy, seemingly incomprehensible both to his parents and to himself.

We try to know God even in this difficulty because by knowing him more fully, we can come to love him more fully. We come to know the Triune God who is at the heart of the Paschal Mystery, the Father who sends the Son to redeem the world, the Son who offers himself as an oblation to the Father, and the Holy Spirit who is sent by the Father and the Son and continues to guide the Church. We come to know the Trinitarian God who in this relationship of persons is a complete self-gift of each Trinitarian person to the other, an exchange by which the divine persons are so intimately united that we cannot say that an act of one of the Trinitarian persons happens without the other two. We come to know the life by which we are to live, for it is by our very participation in the Trinitarian life that we can be called Christians.

It may be difficult, but we do not have to come to know the Trinitarian life on our own, nor should we. We have the great gift of Revelation to help us, the Word of God which is given to us in both Tradition and Scripture which shows us the inner life of the Trinity by the work of the Holy Spirit. The beautiful Trinitarian discourse of the Apostle John in his Gospel from chapters 14-17 which were proclaimed at the close of the Easter season are a perfect example of this, Christ’s words to his Apostles handed down to us. Although the Trinity may be difficult to comprehend, we have every gift we need to understand God as we ought, so give God the time in prayer today to try to know him more, in all his beautiful complexities.
