Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
As we continue our reflection from John Gospel chapter 6, today we hear Jesus reminding the people, “Do not work for perishable food, but for the food that endures to eternal life.” Jesus declares that He is true bread from heaven. Therefore, we should hunger for what will bring us to eternal life.
Not all our hunger should be satisfied. Some of them are mere appetites which could destroy us if we feed them. The more they are fed, the more we yearn for them, the more demanding and distracting they become for us.
There are some forms of thirst or hunger; a desire for importance, type of hunger for acceptance, yearning for a relationship or craving for power.
There are other forms of hunger; for faith, hope and love for God. Those types of deep burning desires are what St Augustine describes as ‘restlessness,’ “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” To experience this type of hunger is not a misfortune but a blessing. This is the imperishable food we are invited to consider in this passage. That urge should propel us for something eternal.
The manna that God fed His people in the desert is a classic example of God’s care for His people. Like last Sunday, Jesus multiplied the loaves to feed the five thousand people not counting children who were hungry. Jesus is inviting for us seek for something more, eternal life.
We can equally ask ourselves, what do we really hunger for in life? Note, not all we want are not really what we need in our journey through life. As schools are about to begin and our children are busy with their wish lists; getting ready for school, parents should check again to see whether that need to register in our religious education program is uppermost here. Since June 23, our parish Coordinator and Secretary have been assisting with registration on Monday, Thursday and Saturday 9:30 am – 12:30 pm. Parents please do not miss this great opportunity to enroll your child before August 11.
Also, remember our 2018 Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal card will be mailed to your home from the Archdiocese, as a reminder to help us support this year’s efforts. We need $13,842, hopefully from 63 people in order to reach our goal as we usually do. We sincerely appreciate all those who have redeemed their pledges. This is one way of working on what is not perishable.
