One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will
I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold
the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
Psalm 27:4
A few years ago, I read the story from the Bible of Mary and Martha (sisters to Lazarus and dear friends of Jesus) to my older girls and asked them which woman I was most like. Spoiler alert: their answer was not quite what I hoped!
If you’re not familiar with this story, Jesus was invited for dinner and while Martha feverishly cleaned the house and prepared the meal, Mary lounged next to Jesus just listening to him speak. Martha was disturbed by this arrangement and confronted Jesus about it! How dare Mary shirk her duties and leave all the busy work to her? Didn't Mary know how important it was to make everything perfect for Jesus?
Jesus’ response went to the heart of the matter and speaks to us today: “Martha, Anna, _______(insert your name), you are worried and troubled by many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
After my kids called me out for being a “Martha” that day, I made a conscious effort to approach my duties in life from a place of worship and allowing that to spill out into the details of life and ministry.
There is a place for serving and for sitting at Jesus’ feet in worship. As we approach Jesus this week, whether it’s in the prayer chapel, at the Mass, driving to work, or in the quiet recesses of our hearts, let's take a moment to sit at his feet and listen to him speak.
When Jesus is our one thing, he transforms every aspect of our worship from duty to delight!
