What is the feast of the Assumption? The feast of the Assumption celebrates when Mary was assumed body and soul into Heaven (her body did not decay). This was a great gift from God and we glorify Him when we rejoice at all the gifts He has given His people. The Assumption of Mary illustrates to us the truth about Christ's promise of eternal life and resurrection of the faithful.
What is a holy day of obligation? A holy day of obligation is a feast that is so special and important, that the faithful are required to come together and praise the Lord in holy Mass on a certain day. One example that people are most familiar with is Christmas which may fall on a day outside of Sunday, but is always celebrated on December 25. Other holy days of obligation include All Saint's Day (November 1), The Immaculate Conception (December 8), and The Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God (January 1).
Why does it matter? (why obligation) First off, it's not just about us. We are also called to be a part of a community. In Jesus' day or for anyone with Jewish background, this makes perfect sense. A large part of the Sabbath was praising God as a community. Mary was raised body and soul into Heaven which is a community of Saints. It is not just about my relationship and God, it is about worshiping our Creator as a community of believers, a community that will continue into our eternal life in Heaven.
