Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
So much of our happiness depends on how we choose to look at the world.
In today’s readings, especially the first reading from the Book of Wisdom 7:7-11 and the Gospel from Mark 10:17-30, we can see where we are called to reflect on a true source of happiness and eternal life.
Christ is the Word and Wisdom of God who is both alive and active. God’s word is effective and is a source of true wisdom for us like we heard in the second reading. It powerfully convinces converts, transforms, conquers, comforts and even humbles a proud heart, and makes a perverse spirit to be meek and obedient.
What is this wisdom? This is an evidence of God’s involvement or intervention in our world. Some call it God’s blue print. We should pray for it and sincerely desire at every moment of our life so that we can make right judgment like King Solomon.
From the Book of Wisdom, the author figuratively puts those words into the mouth of King Solomon who asked for wisdom over material wealth. “I prayed, prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her.” What a beautiful way to personify God as Wisdom Himself from whom all good things emanate and must return to. Hence, nothing can be compared with her. Nothing has value without her and all created things only partake of her beauty and splendor.
Most Jews in Jesus’ day regarded wealth as a blessing and as an opportunity for doing good. In secure world wealth is the most obvious form of security of the future. But if it is not handled with reference and care to the giver, we can lose our focus. A strong attachment to wealth over burdens one to the extent that spiritual journey, quest or search can become very difficult. We can see why the rich young man first ran up to Jesus knelt down before Him and asked Him how to inherit eternal life. Therefore, ‘seek first the kingdom of God and all will be given to you.’ Matt. 6:33

The Holy Rosary in the Month of October:
Saturdays; 4:30 pm: Joyful Mysteries: God wants us to have complete joy. He created us for it. Jesus came so we could be immersed in complete joy: “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete” (John 15:11). The Joyful Mysteries celebrate when joy entered the world, when God entered into the mess of the world because of his incredible love for us.
Sundays; 10:30 am: Glorious Mysteries: In the Glorious Mysteries, we not only see the beautiful glory of God, but we see the incredible dream that God has for each one of us. He wants us to live lives of incredible joy and purpose, and ultimately live with him for eternity.
Today’s Focus: Seeking Then Doing:
To observe the mere basics of our faith, to do the bare minimum, is a kind of indifference to God’s presence in our lives. Our quest must be God’s—to live and love more extravagantly, more fully.
Living and Praying with the world:
Wisdom of God, empty me of whatever gets in the way of seeking you alone. Take my heart and enfold it, caress it, and stretch it to be open to your wisdom, in whatever my life entails. Help me seek your will and live what you teach me.
