To all Regnum Christi members
Dear Friends in Christ,
As I prepared to write this letter to you I was reflecting on today's reading from Ezekiel “
I will deal with you according to what you have done, you who despised your oath, breaking a covenant ... then you shall remember your conduct and be ashamed” (Ezekiel 16:60, 63).
We are all deeply saddened and disgusted, even angry, by the recent revelations concerning Archbishop McCarrick and the hundreds of priests, abusers, identified in the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report that many of us have now read.
Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops said, in a
letter released August 1, 2018, “
we bishops recognize that a spiritual conversion is needed as we seek to restore the right relationship among us and with the Lord. Our Church is suffering from a crisis of sexual morality. The way forward must involve learning from past sins.”
The Church is entering a new crisis and we must unite ourselves with her. We Legionaries and Regnum Christi members are all too familiar with the pain and suffering that comes from such revelations, that come from our past sins. We also are familiar with the hope that only the Risen Lord can provide in these times. The Church needs this hope. The Church needs our prayers and our support, but above all our witness to holiness of life.
Also, the timeliness of the reading from Ezekiel today, reminds me that our God is present to us through the Word and the Holy Mass. His Word is the source of light and the Mass the source of grace that will help his Church understand and persevere through this tragic moment. His providential hand is present affording us this time to repent and reform our ways. He is a loving Father ready to discipline and eager to love.
I want to invite all Regnum Christi members and friends to join together in prayer and penance for healing and renewal in the Church. Let’s especially remember the victims and their families that they may experience the healing needed and desired. Let’s remember the shepherds of the Church in a very particular way. May they be strong shepherds in this crisis and model the way with an open, honest and humble spirit.
Although we as a spiritual family have learned and grown much this last decade, we also continue to heal and seek renewal. Our Lord has been so abundant in his mercy. May we continue to grow and may our prayers be answered.
May our own experience be, in some way, a service we can humbly offer the Church during this deeply painful time.
In Christ,
