In November, I ordered a book online for the Laidback Book Club. Instead of receiving what I ordered, I ended up with the book The Rule of St. Benedict which wasn't even remotely close to the title I was expecting. The publisher apologized and told me to keep the book while they rushed my order. Later that same week, I found a list of the rule of St. Benedict in my file cabinet in a folder dedicated to my new job requirements as an adult formation coordinator. Hmmm, a message from my Father? So this book and list were placed in my "to do eventually" pile. And seeing how it's a new year, perhaps I need to move it into a resolution pile.
I love this quote from Saint Benedict, especially in the light of the new year and the hopes attached to a new year's resolution. We tend to be our own worst critics and taskmasters. Setting goals, experiencing failures and not giving ourselves grace. We should start embracing the mercy from our Father in Heaven who allows us always to begin again.
And that's a resolution worth keeping:
Make room for grace, embrace mercy and always begin again...
