DIVINE MERCY NOVENA BEGINS MARCH 29TH
THE RESPONSE TO TRUST AND CONVERSION
What God most wants of us is to turn to Him with trust. And the first act of trust is: receive His mercy. To trust God is to rely Him who is mercy itself. The Lord wants us to live with trust in Him in all circumstances. We trust Him because He is God, and He loves us and cares for us.
His mercy is always available to us, no matter what we have done or what state we are in, even if our sins are as black as night, and we are filled with fears and anxieties.
The greater the sinner, the greater the right he has to my mercy (Diary 723).
But there is more we can do. As Catholics, as Christians, we can go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and be reconciled to God and to man. The Lord wants us to live reconciled with Him and one another.

THIS Weekend at St. Bernadette
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
The days are coming soon when we will all embrace a new covenant with Jesus. God tells us that He will place a new law within us and write it upon our hearts and that all people will know His love for us, and our sins will be forgiven (Jeremiah 31:31-34).
As we prepare to be closer to Christ in our last several days in the desert, we may want to consider praying Psalm 51 which is prayed in the Liturgy of Hours each week. We ask Jesus to bring us back to the original cleanliness of our heart before the fall in the garden and bring us back to salvation. We ask Jesus for His loving mercy and guidance as we walk through so many of the ups and downs of Lent to receive the complete fullness from sorrow of our Lords passion to the Joy of the resurrection. Are we preparing our hearts to be open completely to Jesus?
Our gospel this week (Jn 12:20-33) reminds us of the hour for our Lord to be glorified, and that of the wheat that falls to the ground, dies, and produces much fruit. As we have been transformed in the desert slowly but surely, we have been moving closer to our own purification, the death to sin, the death to our old ways of doing things, and death to the sorrows that cloud our thinking on this earth. Instead, we have embraced a new covenant. A new beginning, that brings us much fruitfulness, and understanding of the value of serving one another and Jesus. Both Jew and Gentile will have access to Jesus, our mortal bodies will one day die as a grain of wheat, though our souls have the promise of an eternal fruitful one with Jesus if we follow Him.
I pray for all of us that these final days of Lent will continue to be fruitful for each of us as we move along our journey in life. The sun will be setting soon on the life of Jesus on earth as we move closer to Palm Sunday and Holy Week. Though, not too much time from now, the greatest of all gifts, will be made known to all people.

Give me the scoop on Eugene I.
Eugene was a Roman whose father’s name was Rufianus. He served as a priest for most of his adult life and was known for being a gentle, holy, and charitable man. The circumstances around his election were, shall we say, irregular. Eugene definitely was elected during his predecessor’s lifetime, as it appears the emperor tried to force a papal election after Pope St. Martin I’s arrest and exile in 653. Saying, “be careful what you wish for,” the clergy in Rome answered the emperor by electing an equally holy and orthodox pope to replace Martin I on August 10, 654.
It’s said that even Martin I recognized Eugene as pope. However, Martin never formally resigned and canonically there can only ever be one legit pope at a time, so the exact details are lost to history. St. Eugene I died in Rome after a short reign on June 2, 657.

What was he known for?
Since Monothelitism was still a thing, St. Eugene had the same work cut out for him as St. Martin did. Immediately after becoming pope, Eugene sent an envoy to Constantinople, both to notify the emperor of his election and to continue lobbying for an orthodox profession of faith from him. The emperor, having different plans, tricked Eugene’s representatives and sent back to the pope a revision of his own.
St. Maximus the Confessor, while still imprisoned by the emperor, thought the revision was utter nonsense and made his feelings known to the pope. Eugene smoothed things over as best he could, aiming for unity over polemics at every turn. Odds are good that Eugene would have met the same fate as St. Martin, had the Muslim army not overtaken Emperor Constans II at the Battle of Phoenix in 655.
Fun Fact...
Pope St. Eugene I was likely the pope who welcomed the English bishop St. Wilfrid on his first visit to Rome around the year 654. The 20-year-old layman and future bishop was warmly welcomed by the pope, who, the Venerable St. Bede recounts, “placed his blessed hand on the head of the youthful servant of God, prayed for him, and blessed him.”
What else was going on in the world at the time?
The year 656 brought the first Islamic Civil War, when an armed revolt erupted in Egypt. The subsequent infighting brought the expanse of Muslim rule to an abrupt stop.
