The Tradition of St. Joseph’s Bread
According to legend, there was a famine in Sicily many centuries ago. The villagers prayed to St. Joseph, foster-father of the Infant Savior, and asked his intercession before the throne of God. Their prayers were answered.
With the ending of the dreadful famine, a special feast of thanksgiving was held in commemoration of the Saint. This celebration became tradition: wealthy families would prepare huge buffets in gratitude for all blessings bestowed, and would then invite the less fortunate people of the village, especially the homeless and sick.
Join the priests of the Cathedral Basilica as we commemorate The Feast Day of Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Following each Mass (7am, 8am and 12:05pm) Tuesday, March 19,
we will pray the litany of St. Joseph as we process down the main aisle
to the All Saints Chapel, where we will bless and distribute
loaves of bread to all in attendance
(loaves will be individually pre-wrapped for your safety)
