This week is Holy Week! We begin with Palm Sunday, when Jesus enters Jerusalem to shouts of praise!
On Thursday, Jesus celebrates the Last Supper with his friends. The traditional Passover meal they've celebrated their whole lives is turned upside down when Jesus washes their feet and shares his Body and Blood. He knows he will be betrayed by his friend Judas, and he prays for courage and strength in the Garden of Gethsemane. As Judas betrays him with a kiss, he arrested and led away.
On Good Friday, Jesus is put on trial. Pilate tries to release him, but the crowd, encouraged by the Jewish leaders, calls for his death. He is beaten, mocked, crowned with thorns, and forced to carry his cross. Hung on the cross between two criminals, Jesus uses his last hours to forgive those who have hurt him and promise heaven to the thief hanging beside him. He gives up his life for us as his mother and his friend look on. With no time for a proper burial before the Sabbath, he is quickly placed in a tomb, and the stone is rolled in place.
And then we wait... and watch... and pray...
On Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb to finish preparing Jesus's body for burial... and the tomb is empty! Jesus has risen from the dead! Alleluia!
