Many people last weekend participated in a variety of Parades, or walks, or maybe a crawl of sorts for St. Patrick’s Day. Imagine those crowds and all that enthusiasm for just one man, Jesus Christ. People were so moved that they were removing their cloaks and them laying down along with palm branches so that he would not touch the street. They even waved the palms in the air out of excitement. Jesus the Christ was coming to the Holy City.
This excitement is tempered when just days later this same crowd chants to have him crucified. Too often we can get caught in the excitement of the crowd and what other people are doing. We can become dependent on the praise and good will of others. However we are called not to worry about the crowd but to focus on Christ. He is the King of Kings, but not of an earthly Kingdom. He is the Lord of Lords, but not all will follow him. He won the great victory through suffering and death. We have to recognize in our lives that there will be times when following Christ will be like the Procession into Jerusalem. Other times it will look more like carrying the cross with all the ridicule and embarrassment. What matters is our communion with Christ our Savior and the path on which he leads us, not the accolades of the crowd or the taunts of the mob.
Please, remember that this week is different. It is Holy Week and the start of the Easter Triduum. It is a special time in the Church and for us members to enter the Paschal Mystery. Yes some services are long and possibly uncomfortable but they are also filled with tradition and beauty.
