THE DIVINE MERCY NOVENA
In 1935, St. Faustina received a vision of an angel sent by God to chastise a certain city. She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she saw the Holy Trinity and felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with words she heard interiorly:
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 475)
As she continued praying this, the angel became helpless and could not carry out the deserved punishment. The next day, as she was entering the chapel, she again heard this interior voice, instructing her how to recite the prayer that our Lord later called “the Chaplet.” This time, after “have mercy on us” were added the words “and on the whole world”.
Pope St. John Paul II established the 2nd Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. The Divine Mercy Novena begins on Good Friday and continues until the Sunday after Easter.
For those making the nine-day novena, you may say it privately wherever you are, or attend the prayer with us daily at 3:00 p.m. in the church. The novena begins on Good Friday and ends at the closing on Divine Mercy Sunday.
The closing will be held at St. Elizabeth Church on Sunday, April 7, from 2-3:30 p.m. Confessions and Adoration will be available during the Holy Hour from 2-3. The blessing and veneration of the image will conclude with the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Benediction starting at 3:00 p.m. Light Refreshments will be available in the Harmony Room following. All are welcome to attend.
“At three o’clock implore My mercy especially for sinners; and if only for a brief moment immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the Hour of Great Mercy for the whole world. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion.” – St. Faustina’s Diary, 1320.
Pick up a pamphlet for the Divine Mercy Chaplet available in the gathering space.
