My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
“Cry out with joy to God, sing glory of His name, render Him glorious praise” (Cf. Ps 66 (65): 1-2.
The truth of Jesus is recounted once more by the disciples in Lukes’s gospel this week. While our Easter celebration for this year is new in our hearts the truth of the gospel remains forever. The disciples remind us specifically of Jesus’ exact words. Not something that is made up. Not some summary of what He said in a narrative but the precise quoted words in scripture. Jesus said, “peace be with you”; “why are you troubled?”; “you are witnesses”; “look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself”; “Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Lk: 24:35-48). Our joy should be complete in Jesus’ willingness to sacrifice all for all of us.
Pope Francis describes this week’s gospel meaning from his homily April 19th, 2015. Most importantly we are witnesses. “A witness is a person who has seen, who recalls and tells. See, recall, and tell”. Jesus makes certain He is seen by many after the resurrection in order that disciples and others may see that He is truly risen. We recall this sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus this Easter as did the disciples. And finally, for us to be a clear witness of Jesus is to tell our story with others.
In our Catholic schools’ teachers are asked to give witness in their own lives following the gospel teachings in living their lives as witness to Jesus. In serving and helping others, firefighters, emergency medical providers, military, police, doctors, and nurses serve as witnesses in serving others sacrificing self as Jesus did to help others. Those in the Church, pope, cardinals, priests, deacons, sisters, and lay persons serve Jesus by helping share what they have seen, by recalling the gospels and sharing that with others. And you to my brothers and sisters serve as witnesses in all we do in serving Jesus in our lives.
During this Easter season, hopefully, we have become more like Jesus by helping and serving Him by “recalling” His sacrifice on the cross to heal us from our sins. Hopefully, we have recalled deeply in prayer and reflection what this truly means for our own salvation. Hopefully, we have been so happy and full of joy that we share this truth of the gospel with others. If not, today my brothers and sisters is the day to “see, recall, and tell others of the glory of God”. Be joyful and share the Good News with all we encounter. Cry out with joy for God and share all that love with others.
In Christ,
Deacon Patrick
