Second Primary and Runoff Election
Tuesday, May 14th
- A Statewide Republican Second Primary Election will be held for NC Lieutenant Governor, NC Auditor and U.S. House District 13 (Wake County only).
- In Orange County, all eligible voters may vote in a runoff for the third seat on the Board of Education.

Reason for a Second Primary: A second primary may be requested because no other candidate received more than 30% of the vote at the March 5th Primary.
Who is Eligible to Vote in a Second Primary?
- All voters who live in the district for which a second primary is conducted and are registered with the political party of the candidates are eligible to vote in the second primary.
- Unaffiliated voters who live in that district and either didn’t vote in the March 5 primary, or who voted on March 5 the ballot of the party for which the second primary is being held, would also be eligible.
- Individuals who become eligible to vote between the primary and second primary and who are otherwise eligible to vote in the second primary may register and vote on the day of the second primary — May 14.
Dates and Deadlines
Here are voter dates and deadlines for the 2024 second primary election in North Carolina:
- March 30, 2024: County boards of elections begin mailing absentee ballots to eligible voters who submitted an absentee ballot request form.
- April 25, 2024: In-person early voting begins.
- May 7, 2024: Absentee ballot request deadline (5 p.m.).*
- May 11, 2024: In-person early voting ends (3 p.m.).
- May 14, 2024: Election Day.
- May 14, 2024: Absentee ballot return deadline (7:30 p.m.).*
