Pastoral Council Nominations
This weekend, members of our parish will have the opportunity to nominate a 'potential' candidate for the reconstituting of our parish's Pastoral Council. According to the universal law of the Church, members of Pastoral Councils must be practising Catholics 'in full Communion' with the Church, 'who are outstanding in firm faith, high moral standards and prudence.' In a very practical sense, potential candidates must be Baptized and registered members of St. Joseph, who are 'married in the Church', whether Sacramentally or by the Bishop's permission in non-Sacramental but still valid ways, or are living a chaste single life. In the best of all worlds, we are looking for a wide diversity of candidates, with varying ages, cultural backgrounds, life experience and expertise. But we are especially looking for new people, who perhaps have never served before, along with seasoned veterans.
The Pastoral Council is a 'consultative body' that works "primarily to assist the pastor in fostering the spiritual life of the parish, through planning, programs and services to promote active witnessing of the Gospel." They especially help set the 'big picture' vision for the future, 5 years and beyond. The council will meet at least 4 times a year according to diocesan policy...though perhaps a bit more at first.
As we restart this important ministry in our parish, please pray about someone you know who fits these foundational parameters, and be willing to write their name down at Mass this weekend, or submit a name to Fr. Jack early this week. Fr. Jack will then, according to the number of nominations, approach each potential candidate discreetly, to confirm their qualifications and willingness. You do not need their permission to nominate them. They can refuse nomination, if they have good reason to do so. If they are willing to run in the upcoming election, they will be added to the ballot. Ideally, half of the Pastoral Council should be elected and the other half appointed. We hope and pray that those who are qualified nominees will say yes to the confidence placed in them by their fellow parishioners. Come Holy Spirit!
