Gospel -- This poor widow gave from her poverty; she gave all she had. Mark 12:38-44
Our lesson today is one of being good stewards of the gifts we have received. Today’s gospel, MK 12:38–44, teaches us about the generosity of the poor widow who makes an offering of but two small coins into the Temple treasury. While the wealthy were donating larger sums, Jesus points out that they were giving out of their surplus while the widow was giving out of her need. Often we are tempted to think that we can simply give God something like a tip at a restaurant rather than take the work of God’s Church seriously with an appropriate donation. God has blessed us with such an abundance of grace and love that we cannot help but celebrate this each Sunday. The Eucharist is truly a celebration of thanksgiving for all that God does for us, in particular for freeing us from sin and eternal death and leading us into everlasting life. The proper response of a true Christian, then, is to become a good steward of the gifts received. When we reflect that Jesus gave everything for us we are impelled to return that love in practical ways by service in the Church. While we have chosen to have monthly tables for ministry expositions rather than a ministry fair this year, I ask you to ask the Holy Spirit to inspire you as to what you may be called to do with your gifts. Perhaps you will discover your inner need to give yourself to the Lord more deeply in a personal relationship by taking time in prayer, adoration and service in the Church and in the world. Come Holy Spirit and guide us in our response to your divine inspirations to be good stewards of our blessings!

Jesus and his friends are observing the people coming into the temple, how some are putting a lot of money into the collection, while one poor widow could only put in two small coins. It wasn’t much, but Jesus points out, she put in all she had. The same goes for us. God doesn’t ask us to give to Him what we do not have, but He hopes we will grow to want to give Him the whole of ourselves. Last week we heard in the Gospel Jesus reminding us to love God with our whole heart, our whole mind, and all of our strength. Our giving is not in the amount— because what is a sacrifice for one might not be for another—but it is a giving that comes from our place of compassion and love, our heart. Let us ask God this week to not be so taken up by what we have, but what we do with that which we have been given.

How can we respond to God when he speaks to us? To respond to God means to believe him. [See Catechism 142-149] Anyone who wants to believe needs a heart that is ready to listen (see 1 Kings 3:9). In many ways God seeks contact with us. In every human encounter, in every moving experience of nature, in every apparent coincidence, in every challenge, every suffering, there is a hidden message from God to us. He speaks even more clearly to us when he turns to us in his Word or in the voice of our conscience. He addresses us as friends. Therefore we, too, should respond as friends and believe him, trust him completely, learn to understand him better and better, and accept his will without reservation.
