“These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.”
(John 10:16b)
“There will be one flock, one shepherd.” These are Jesus’ words. However, they are not just words, but facts. How do we know this is a fact? Look at our Churches. They are filled with people from all around the world. People who speak different languages, are culturally different, have different financial backgrounds, etc. And who is the one uniting the variety of sheep? The “one shepherd.” That is, Jesus Christ. For he is, “in fact,” the good shepherd. The one who laid down his life, for you and me to be united to his very body. For you and me to be one within the flock. This is not just something that he will do, but something that he is doing.
Therefore, when people say they want facts, proof, or whatever, point to your Church community. One which is extremely imperfect, yet somehow, someway, still one flock. Although every one of us is completely different, because we have chosen to live in Jesus Christ, the Shepherd, we are in fact one flock. It may not be the most beautiful and well-organized flock, but we are still one because of the one shepherd. And in our death like his, we will rise like him. Then, and only then, will the flock be perfectly one. And perfectly one, why? Because of the one shepherd, who himself was perfect.
This is our mission. To go and draw others to the one shepherd, so that they might become part of the one flock. It’s not enough to simply be apart of the one flock. We must try to lead people to the good shepherd, who will then make them part of the one flock. Let us trust the one and good shepherd and help him fulfill this mission he himself left us. “There will be one flock, one shepherd.”
Do you see Jesus as the "one shepherd," who will unite us all into the "one flock?"
Shepherd of souls, guide my life to always seek and unite myself to your flock, the one flock! Amen.
