In a two room schoolhouse, in 1888, the foundation was built for our current All Saints Catholic School in Alpena. Since 1888, several other buildings have been built to educate our children in a strong Catholic tradition. As we are closing another chapter in the history of our school and preparing for an exciting new chapter, several celebrations are being planned. The PTO will be hosting a Final Spring Fling Luau in the St. Mary’s school on April 27th from 3-5 pm. Several fun games and activities have been planned for the children and families. The PTO would appreciate any help with the event. Parents should contact Nicole Smith (nsmith@alpenaallsaints.org) or Melissa Doubek (mdoubek@alpenaallsaints.org) if available to help out.
Alumni and former staff of All Saints Catholic School are also going to have the opportunity to celebrate St. Mary’s school during a special ceremony. On Thursday, June 6th, ASCS will host a moving ceremony from 5:00-6:00 pm. Join us in prayer and share your favorite stories of your years at ASCS. Feel free to bring your own memorabilia to share with others at the ceremony.

God works through each of us to share His love and kindness. We strive to grow problem solvers at All Saints Catholic School. This week ASCS recognizes the kindness of Lily Barth. Lily is caring and always respectful of her classmates and teachers. Her empathetic nature makes her quickly respond to the emotions of her classmates and makes them feel at ease.
CULINARY ARTS AT ART IN THE LOFT
The 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to learn more about cooking from the staff at Art in the Loft. This week they learned how to cook a steak dinner!
Praying the Rosary Together
"Prayer is the Key, Prayer is the Key".... ASCS students gathered on Wednesday to pray the rosary together. Children in the Prekindergarten through 8th grade learned about the rosary and prayed the first two decades together. The 3rd grade class did a wonderful job leading the choir.
Enjoying the Sun While Learning the Sounds and Rhythm of Language.
Taking every opportunity to help our students progress into fluent readers, Mrs. Carr gathered the preschool students before recess to practice identifying sounds, blending sounds, and identifying letters. Research shows that a proficient reader must understand that words are made up of individual sounds, or phonemes. This awareness of sounds is called Phonemic Awareness. “The lack of phonemic awareness is the most powerful determinant of the likelihood of failure to read.” (Adams, 1990)
PLANTING NATIVE TREES
The Middle School Students planted some native Michigan trees in the nature area at the new school. They planted a Hickory Nut tree, Sycamore tree, American Chestnut, Butternut, and Tulip Tree. The site already contains White Birch, Jack Pine, White Pine, Tamarack and poplar. We hope to add more maple and oak.
The Middle School students have been germinating native wild flower seeds to plant in a pollinator garden at the new school. They are also germinating vegetable seeds. Thank you Mrs. Costain for setting up the class with seeds, grow lights, and seedling pots.
Each month All Saints Catholic School recognizes a student who makes a difference in the areas of Faith, Service, and Academics. During the month of March ASCS recognizes 7th grade student, Joshua Lacross. Joshua is the gentle giant at All Saints Catholic School. He mentors young altar servers at Mass. When he isn't mentoring altar servers, he is teaching the preschool kids to use proper etiquette during the Mass. Joshua is excelling in his science, English, and social studies courses. He was the lead engineer on the Middle School FIRST Tech robot this fall. Joshua was also the center on the ASCS Archangel Basketball team.

WE NEED YOU HELP!!!
The PTO is planning a Luau Family Fun Day on Saturday, April 27th from 3-5 pm. This will be our final fun fling in the current building before moving so several fun activities have been planned. Please consider helping out at the Luau and the school wide Field Day on Wednesday, June 5th.
Testing Out the New Basketball Hoop
Everyone is welcome to join us for the Children's Mass on Wednesday's at 9:00 am. During the Children's Mass, the students have the opportunity to serve out the ministry of the church as Altar Servers and readers.

To request a Spiritual Prayer Bouquet, email the following information to Melissa Doubek (mdoubek@alpenaallsaints.org). A class of students will send a card with the number of prayers said. You may request a Spiritual Bouquet for you or another person.
