E Happenings - April 25, 2024

Dear Families of Epiphany School,

I have loved the sense of family and community I have felt here at Epiphany since my arrival. Today ushered in my first Grandparent’s Day experience and, once again, I was blown away by the thoughtful TLC that we were able to bestow upon our guests. The devils in the details, and careful thought was given to ensure that our grandparents were pampered and appreciated.  It was another one of those signature Epiphany “family” events, and our patrons left feeling the joy and love that comes from our school mission. Many thanks to SAC Chair, Laura Piechel and Manager of Admissions and Events, Ann Evans, for all of their great work in planning a truly memorable morning for our grandparents and students.  I’m looking forward to the encore tomorrow!    

Industrial Arts Steering Committee:  During Grandparent's Day Father Dufner and I announced the formation of a steering committee for the development of an industrial arts program at Epiphany.  This was the first Epiphany group to hear it, and we look forward to talking further as our ideas come to fruition.  We are still in the formative stages, and some time away from launching, but the planning and formation on the front end is so crucial to identify needs, logistics, costs and programming.  We envision a first-rate program with state-of-the-art equipment and a robust curriculum that aligns with our classical approach.  It will be exciting to explore the art of the possible for the future of our school.  We hope to partner with interested benefactors to put the pieces together, including a plan to fund this exciting new endeavor.  Please reach out to us if you would like to be a part of the committee! 

Staffing Updates: 

• 4th Grade- You may have noticed a young lady shadowing our 3rd graders at Mass on Tuesday. After Mass she spent time in our 3rd and 4th grade classrooms.  This young lady was Miss Rachel Roeber, and she will be teaching 4th grade here at Epiphany for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Rachel comes to us from Brilla Veritas Elementary, a classical charter school in the Bronx, New York.  At Brilla Veritas she taught 3rd grade, as well as an after-school catechesis and sacramental preparation program for 2nd grade students.  Rachel holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in Catholic Studies from the University of Saint Thomas.  She is very excited to join us next fall, and very much enjoyed her time here on Tuesday getting to know the Epiphany community.  "My understanding of education is that which is both academically enriching as well as deeply integrated with the student’s formation as a disciple of Christ."

• Math and Reading Interventionist:  As you are all aware, our beloved Robin Rodgers will be joining her husband in retirement at the end of the school year.  I am very pleased to report our very own Nancy McGrath will be stepping into the role of early Math and Reading Interventionist this fall.  Nancy and Nicole Posteuca, who will be returning to her role in remedial and small group support, will provide a dynamic "one, two punch" in support of our students and teachers when it comes to math and reading next fall.

• Middle School:  I am very pleased to announce that we have hired for the Middle School Math/Science position for 2024-2025. Miss Rose Birkey will be joining the Epiphany family this coming fall. Rose comes to us from Benedictine College where she is currently finishing her student teaching assignment in secondary mathematics. During her time at Benedictine, Rose also served as a substitute teacher in the Atchison School District.  Rose is excited to join Epiphany and is looking forward to being a part of our mission to form saints and citizens. This hire allows for a more fully resourced math and science program and allows for greater administrative support from Mr. Treml and Mrs. Reithmeier.  From her cover letter- "I feel called to be a part of forming the next generation of Catholics."

All agreements must be signed by Friday, May 3, to be considered for acceptance for the 2024-2025 school year. We have hit the spring illness season. Please be mindful of sending your child(dren) to school when they are under the weather, to ensure the health of all their classmates and teachers.

When should my child stay home from school?

Many students and parents are frequently concerned about when students should stay home or attend school. The following information is intended to help with this decision.

General practice:

• If a student has had a fever of 100 degrees or more, the student must stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without fever reducing medication.

• If a student has vomited or had diarrhea, the student must stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.

• If a student has had any rash that may be disease-related or the cause is unknown, check with your family physician before sending the student to school.

• Cough

  • A mild hacking cough often starts after the first few days of a common cold. A child with mild symptoms, no fever and otherwise feeling well, may be fine at school. A child with a deep or uncontrollable cough may need additional rest at home.

    • You know your child(ren) best. A child who has the sniffles but hasn't slowed down at home is likely well enough for the classroom. But one who has coughed all night and had a hard time getting up in the morning might need an extra day or two at home.

• If a student is ill, please call the school attendance line daily to report the illness.
