How Luther Stole Christmas

"You can see what our papists and Junkers, who have chosen innumerable saviors, have felt about this faith. Indeed, the papists still want to retain the mass, the invocation of saints, and their invented works by which we are to be saved. This is as much as to say, I do not believe in the Savior and Lord whom Mary bore; and yet they sing the words of the angel, hold their triple masses [at Christmas] and play their organs."
These fightin' words preached by Martin Luther on Christmas day, 1530 get to the heart of the beef between protestants and Catholics. Are we justified by faith alone - or by faith and works? Even Pope Benedict XVI, in a little known address to a papal audience, claimed, "Luther's phrase: 'faith alone' is true if it is not opposed to faith in charity." So did He fall into a Protestant error? After all, St. James' famous statement that "a man is justified by works and not by faith alone" (James 2:24) clearly shows that good works justify us as well, right?
