The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is celebrated on January 1st ending the Octave of Christmas. In addition to recognizing Mary's role as the Mother of God, it is also the day that Jesus, as a Jewish boy would have been named. The celebration was moved to January 1st in the 1960s to align the celebration with the ancient practices of the early church in Rome.
The 1st World Day of Peace was in 1968, called for by Pope Paul VI, and has been commemorated every year since.
