In the great perspective of the liturgical year, Ash Wednesday is the prelude to the real beginning of Lent, which is the First Sunday.  The most ancient experience of the Church attests that the Temptations of Christ have always been proclaimed at Mass on this First Sunday.

As we look carefully at the unfolding of the Temptations, we note that there are three moments when Satan appears to Jesus in order to tempt Him in three areas: hunger, pride and greed.  We can learn from how Jesus responded how to conduct ourselves in temptations.

Primarily he teaches us to have a great confidence in God. He entrusted himself completely to the Father’s care: his life, his mission, his glory.  If we place our confidence in God, then we will not be overcome by the empty promises of the devil because we know that only God can give true blessings and real happiness.

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength, but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.” (10:13).  It would be appropriate to keep a bookmark on this verse so that we can turn to it over and again and be inspired by the Holy Spirit and awaken a great confidence in God.  

Rather than being disturbed by the trials we face that the Gospel identifies as three categories:  hunger, pride and greed, we are invited to be faithful to grace of God and turn to Him in humble and confident prayer.

Saint Augustine once wrote: “Lord God, do not give me as prey to an irreverent and foolish spirit; but take possession of my heart, that I may always think of You.”

En la perspectiva del año litúrgico, el Miércoles de Ceniza es el preludio al inicio real de la Cuaresma, que es hoy, el primer domingo. La experiencia más antigua de la Iglesia testifica que las tentaciones de Cristo siempre han sido proclamadas en la misa del Primer Domingo de Cuaresma. 

Al ver cómo se desarrollan las tentaciones, notamos que hay tres momentos en los que Satanás se aparece ante Jesús para tentarlo de tres formas: el hambre, el orgullo y la avaricia. Aprendemos la manera en que Jesús respondió como debemos comportarnos ante las tentaciones. 

Primeramente, nos enseña a tener gran confianza en Dios. Jesús se encomendó por completo al cuidado del Padre: su vida, su misión y su gloria. Si nosotros ponemos nuestra confianza en Dios, no nos vencerán las promesas vacías del diablo porque sabemos que solo Dios nos puede dar las verdaderas bendiciones y la verdadera felicidad. 

Bajo la inspiración del Espíritu Santo, San Pablo escribió a los Corintios: “Dios es fiel y no permitirá que sean tentados por encima de sus fuerzas. En el momento de la tentación les dará fuerza para superarla.” (1 Cor 10:13).  Sería apropiado colocar un separador de libros en este versículo en la Biblia para que podamos volver a este pasaje una y otra vez, y recibir la inspiración del Espíritu Santo, para despertar una gran confianza en Dios. 

En lugar de ser perturbados por las tentaciones que enfrentamos, identificadas en el evangelio en tres categorías: el hambre, el orgullo y la avaricia, estamos invitados a ser fieles a la gracia de Dios y a volvernos hacia Él orando con humildad y confianza. 

San Agustín escribió: “Señor Dios, no me entregues como presa a un espíritu irreverente y necio, sino toma posesión de mi corazón para que siempre piense en Ti.”
