At its meeting on Thursday, February 7, at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 455 Main Street, the Worcester School Committee will continue its consideration of an update of the sex education unit in the Worcester Public Schools Health Education curriculum. Several months ago the School Committee had a program before it (Making Proud Choices) for grades 6-8 which one Committee Member called extraordinarily graphic, amoral and inappropriate for many children of that age. The School Committee took no action on that program and the School Administration has since recommended another program (Michigan Model for Health).
We understand that in December Planned Parenthood of Boston scheduled an organizing meeting in Worcester (Worcester Youth Deserve Comprehensive Sex-Ed) to prompt people to take action and make a final push. Other voices now also seem to be advocating the adoption of Making Proud Choices.
If you are a Worcester resident, consider coming to City Hall this Thursday, February 7, at 7 p.m. to oppose vivid instruction in sexual activity to eleven-to-thirteen-year-old children and to support the exploration of alternatives by the school administration. While the Michigan Model for Health Program also raises serious questions, it is less objectionable than Making Proud Choices. Strong parental notification provisions could address some of those continuing concerns.
If you are unable to make the meeting on Thursday, please consider calling or emailing School Committee members to express your concerns. Many thanks.
Msgr. Tom Sullivan
