Zoey Bermanis
Zonya Bermanis

Nelah Morales-Garcia

The parish family of Our Lady of Fatima is privileged also to have received, through the Rite of Welcoming, the following beloved sons and daughters of God, baptized members of the Body of Christ, seeking full communion with the Catholic Church through confirmation and first communion:
Chase Carlson
Patty Domenico
Andrea Mitchell
Julianna Sweeting
The Rite of Acceptance and the Rite of Welcoming mark the beginning of the formal period of initiation into the Church. During the catechumenate period, the catechumens’ and candidates’ faith is nurtured through growth in prayer and Christian community, and through an on-going process of study and formation. If a person dies while a catechumen, he or she receives a full Christian burial and is considered to have been a member of Christ’s body, the Church. Those who participate in these Rites publicly declare their intention to continue their journey toward becoming Catholics. They are asked more fully to embrace the Gospel message with the help of God, and are also signed with the cross to show that they now belong to Christ, the Shepherd of souls. In this Rite, the parish community has the opportunity to more fully participate in and pray for those in the RCIA process. This Rite places these catechumens and candidates in a formal relationship with the universal Church. By Church law, the Pope and all bishops are to pray for those who have gone through this Rite.

In the Word
Deacon Rich reminded us that the Beatitudes are as important in showing us how to live as the Ten Commandments. Here are some points to keep us reflecting on Sundays mass readings in the week ahead:
According to Jesus, the poor are fortunate, because God has chosen them. God favors the weak and the helpless...When we are helpless we are forced to rely not on our own strength, but on God’s love and goodness...We are not trapped in self-sufficiency, but freed to depend on God, who is our true hope...
Those who weep and mourn are those who are open to the pain that comes from loving... To love with the love of Christ Jesus leaves us vulnerable... Real love includes suffering, but the fruit of such love is participation in the life of God himself.
The world will continue to entice us to embrace power, but the suffering love of God in Christ is powered by humility.
Father Henri's THREE:
Blessed are you… - Luke 6:20
I’ve been thinking about the intersections between our faith and our politics, not least because the Respect Life Ministry and I had an evening of reflection in the midst of the hearings over the sex education bill and the recent news about late-term abortion legislation in New York and Virginia. Among the take-aways from our time of prayer: it’s difficult both to defend what we passionately believe to be true and good, and to maintain an active, uncompromising stance of suffering love toward others. I want to be right. I want to win. And if I’m right then, by gosh, someone else is wrong. If I win, then someone has to lose.
This zero-sum game is not the way of Jesus. Jesus’s promises are not directed to the self-righteous and the winners. There’s a Hebrew word, anawim. These are the “lowly” that Mary, in her Magnificat, proclaims that God has lifted up as He casts the mighty from their thrones. They are the poor whom Jesus calls blessed. They are Jesus who “empties himself, taking the form of a slave” (Phil 2:7). Jesus identifies with – and calls us to identify with – the anawim: the poor, the hungry, the weeping, the hated.
Discipleship Challenge:
I can feel righteous in standing up for the unborn but flinch at standing in love against the onslaught of false and even hateful rhetoric that may follow. As a prayer-practice, consider simply noticing this week: When do I find myself wanting more to be right than to be loving? What is happening not only around but inside of me? Can I take this moment to Jesus in prayer and listen to what he, the Suffering Servant, has to teach me?
