I received some difficult news from my oncologist this past Tuesday. The results of a CT scan on my chest showed some improvement on a few of the lesions in my lungs, but others have continued to grow. Unfortunately, it also showed that the cancer appears to have spread to my liver and kidneys, so the overall prognosis is not good. My doctor is continuing my immunotherapy treatment until we get the results of my PET scan at the end of April.
Physically, I feel fine at the moment and, after a conversation with Bishop Zurek, I remain committed to serving in active ministry as long as possible... but, of course, that may entail some limited ability to do everything a pastor is expected/supposed to do, so I ask for your continued patience. I'm trying to maintain a positive attitude while not being unrealistic or in denial about the seriousness of my health situation.
Please continue to keep me and all who are suffering from cancer or other illnesses in your prayers. Also, while I very much appreciate your concern and kindness, it will be helpful to me if you could refrain from asking me questions or saying much about my health at this weekend's Masses. I've shared with you pretty much everything that I know right now... and I definitely want to try to avoid being too overwhelmed by all of this in the days ahead.
There's no need to reply to or comment on this message. I already know of your prayers, love, and support! Thanks for being the great parish community that you are! I appreciate you more than I can express!
