It’s that time of year again when we get to exercise our Latin muscles!
For those who did not grow up around the Liturgy (that would be me!) and as a refresher course for the cradle Catholics in the room, here are some fun facts to help make the Latin portions of the Mass even more meaningful.
NOBLE + BEAUTIFUL
Latin is a beautiful language fit for a King and his Church who throughout history has embraced beauty in all its forms.
IMPARTIAL + INCLUSIVE
By its very nature, Latin does not favor one culture or tongue over another but rather brings us together.
IMMUTABLE + TIMELESS
Latin doesn’t evolve and change over time giving us clarity that can be passed down through the generations.
APOSTOLIC + UNIVERSAL
Latin has been a powerful tool for spreading the Gospel throughout the world and continues to be used by the Apostolic See to communicate immutable truths, giving Holy Mother Church her “maternal voice.”
So, when you add your voice to the Sanctus or Agnus Dei, imagine your brothers and sisters around the world along with the angels and saints in heaven joining you in this timeless prayer that transcends generational and cultural barriers.
In these moments, we see more clearly how we are truly one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.
...a primary place must surely be given to that language...so admirable a means for the spreading of Christianity throughout the West.
