In the Word
“Do
you love me?” and he said to him,
“Lord,
you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Jesus
said to him, "Feed my sheep.”
John 21:17
Our love of God can only be a response: God always takes the initiative, loving us first, “while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8). We don’t merit God’s love. A parishioner reminded me yesterday of this essential truth, asking, “When will God love you more than He loves you right now?” The answer, of course, is never. No matter how deficient, unworthy, sinful, or defeated I feel, God is not waiting for me to reform myself before He loves me. God loves me entire, right now, as much as he ever could. Redemption comes through Christ alone. Nothing I can do diminishes the absolute power of what Jesus Chris accomplished on the cross. For me.
The last time Peter was standing before a charcoal fire he denied Jesus three times. Before this new charcoal fire on the beach, Jesus invites Peter three times to embrace redemption. We stood before a fire two weeks ago at the opening of the Easter Vigil. In the wake of our denials of him, our participation in asking for his crucifixion, as we do on Passion Sunday and Good Friday in remembrance of our own sins, Christ returns to feed us.
This is what it looks like to encounter the Risen Christ: We are fed, and we are called, again and again, to accept his forgiving, transforming love and to participate in the vocation of our Good Shepherd.
For further reflection: Peter’s vocation is fulfilled as he and his heirs in the priesthood feed the flock of God with the Eucharist, but you and I, disciples of the Risen One, are also called to “participation in the one priesthood of Christ” (Lumen Genium II, 10). How do I exercise this vocation in response to God’s love for me in Christ? Who are the lambs I am called to tend for his sake?
