Spy Wednesday
One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over. (Matthew 26:14-16)
Today is traditionally known as Spy Wednesday, for it is the day that Judas begins looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. This reminds us that betrayal doesn't happen suddenly overnight but rather a gradual process. Betrayal consists in the unwillingness to change for Jesus Christ. Betrayal happens when we start to make compromises in our lives, when we fail to pray, when we cater to the lies of the world. Betrayal brews through our complaining, self-indulgence, passive-aggressiveness, anxiety, and jealousy. Betrayal reigns when we think we’ve got it all figured out. Judas’s character is in us all in many ways. The opposite of betrayal is profession. How many times have we professed our faith in God and made our promises and we don’t keep them with our best ability? Let us take time today to reflect on our profession of faith when we said “yes” to Christ:
Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God’s children?
Do you reject the glamor of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin?
Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness?
Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
How well have your living out your profession of faith?
Lord Jesus, help me to reject the seductions of the world and to profess your Name in every action of my life. Hail Mary full of grace…
Peace in Christ,
