NEWMAN BOARD OF EDUCATION
- 1 seat open and 2 candidates
Steve Doerfler
Newman Catholic is an essential part of our community, and it has played an important role in my life and the life of my children. My wife, Laura, was an elementary teacher at Newman for 15 years. All three of my adult children, Jared, Jocelyn, and Jenna, were in the Newman system, with Jared (‘07) and Jocelyn (‘09) graduating from Newman. The Catholic education Newman provides is an excellent example of stewardship, and I feel very strongly this should continue to be our calling. I have been part of Epiphany Parish since we moved to Mason City in 1990. I have further integrated myself into our Catholic community by serving on Pastoral Council, raising funds for the renovation of the St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, volunteering as a hospitality minister and participating in a weekly men’s prayer group. Laura and I have been blessed to be part of North Iowa. With my active involvement leading a successful NI company, Metalcraft, I am making the commitment to run for Newman School Board. While I believe that Newman has dedicated faculty, as I have witnessed firsthand through Laura, and there are many reasons to support Newman, I also believe we can continue to raise the bar. The following is my pledge if I am elected to serve on the Board:
1.I will use my experience and understanding of skill sets required for young adults to be successful in order to identify ways to further prepare Newman graduates for the future. I will also encourage development of and education on opportunities that currently exist in North Iowa in an effort to retain more graduates in our community.
2.I will listen and learn, while acting in a humble and selfless manner to make the best long-term decisions for students and faculty.
3.I will challenge the status quo to allow us to accomplish more than we thought possible.
I am optimistic that my business background with Metalcraft will help provide a positive perspective on the Board, and I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to positive growth and change at Newman. I appreciate your consideration for this important position.

My family and I moved to Mason City in December 2015. Prior to arriving in Mason City, Amy and I were members of parishes in Lincoln, NE and Southern Pines, NC. My wife and I’ve supported these previous parishes in many ways over the years. For example, we’ve coached various sport teams, served on committees, and organized fund drives but have not previously served on the Board of Education. At this point in my career, I find interest and the desire to support the school and my community toward providing the best education experience for our children.
