In the Word
Then
I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth.
The former heaven and the former earth had passed away,
and the sea was no more.
Revelation 21:21
We Christians, discouraged by the sin of the world, can sometimes imagine that, in time, God is going to scrap the whole mess. Christianity becomes, in effect, an escape plan in which we, the faithful, are whisked away from the fallen world “down here” into the bliss of heaven “up there” (perhaps following a suitable time in purgatory). This is not the picture St. John paints in the Book of Revelation.
John describes a new heaven and a new earth. We’re not going up somewhere; the new Jerusalem, the center of the new earth, is coming down (Rev 21:2). This is the same sort of imagery St. Paul uses in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, where he says that, at the end of time, Christ “will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” He continues, “Thus we shall always be with the Lord” – down here as he returns to live among us forever. God’s presence is what defines the new heavens and the new earth.
This is how God meant creation to be, from the first chapter of Genesis – a perfect marital union between God and His good creation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the final consummation of God’s plan of redemption like this:
For man, this consummation will be the final realization of the unity of the human race, which God willed from creation and of which the pilgrim Church has been "in the nature of sacrament." Those who are united with Christ will form the community of the redeemed, "the holy city" of God, "the Bride, the wife of the Lamb." She will not be wounded any longer by sin, stains, self-love, that destroy or wound the earthly community…
And it’s not just us humans that God is redeeming. The Catechism continues: “For the cosmos, Revelation affirms the profound common destiny of the material world and man…” (CCC 1045-46)
For further reflection: It’s common to think about “heaven” as somewhere else where someday we hope to go. But Sacred Scripture, affirmed in the Catechism (326), says that heaven is simply wherever God is, and earth is where we are. Where are the places that you see heaven – that is, God’s presence – here and now? How do you participate in the life of heaven today? The Lord’s Prayer calls us to ask that things on earth become as they are in heaven. Every time we pray this prayer, we welcome God’s presence into every corner of his good creation, uniting our desire with that of the Father for the final redemption of all creation.
