Dear Parents and Guardians,
This message is not intended to cause alarm, it is to help us all keep our children safe and healthy. It has come to our attention that a FEW of our students have been using Juul and other vaping devices/electronic cigarettes and may have been posting their behavior on social media such as SnapChat. We feel it is important for all parents to know this information because trends usually indicate that if a few students have been rumored to do something, there are a few who have remained undetected.
Juuling, vaping and the use of Electronic Cigarettes (e-cigs) describe methods of delivering nicotine without the use of a tobacco product. The level of nicotine ingested by youth when vaping is far greater than when smoking typical cigarettes. Vaping smoke is largely odorless and difficult to detect, though if seen it looks like a very large white cloud that quickly disappears. The "cigarette" often looks like a USB key/Thumb Drive for your computer. E-cigs can also look like steroid inhalers commonly used to treat asthma.
If you have questions about vaping, please contact us. Mrs. Spangler, our school nurse, is happy to answer your questions and we are all happy to help. PLEASE discuss this message with your children as vaping of any kind is a serious health concern. PLEASE check your child's/children's social media, text messages, and methods of communication to ensure their safety. Possession and consumption of Juul and other E-cigarettes are illegal for people under the age of 18. Our governor is considering increasing that age limit to 21 due to this being such a serious health concern, especially for our youth who only obtain these devices illegally.
If a student is found using or in the possession of these devices on school grounds at any time there will be consequences up to and including suspension and consideration of expulsion. If you find that your child/children have engaged in vaping behavior, we are here to help you find an appropriate way to intervene. Please think of our response much like a person who is caught using drugs and/or alcohol on the job. That person would be treated differently than the person who comes forward stating that they have a drug or alcohol problem and they want help to stop using. We want our children to be safe and healthy. If you need our help we are here to help.
Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mummey and Dr. Roberts
