New Priests Assigned to Serve UCat
May 17, 2019. Bishop Mark Spalding has named Fr. Gervan Menezes chaplain of University Catholic, effective July 1. He replaces Fr. Michael Fye, who is named pastor of St. Ann Church and School in Nashville.
Fr. Fye, who has served as chaplain of UCat since 2015, is confident that University Catholic is in very good hands. “My friend, Fr. Gervan, and I were ordained together and lived at the Cathedral rectory together for a few years. He heard a lot about UCat from me, and I witnessed him generously serving the high school students. He understands relational ministry, is a hard worker, and UCat’s strong liturgical reputation will be well served by him.
“Fr. G” was ordained to the priesthood in 2014 and currently serves as associate pastor of St. Philip Church in Franklin. He serves as Master of Ceremonies for Bishop Spalding, and previously was Chaplain for the Diocese’s Youth Office and for Father Ryan High School.
A native of Brazil, Fr. G studied for the priesthood at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas, where he received a Master’s in Divinity and Master of Arts in theology from the Oblate School of Theology. He also has a Sacrae Theologiae Baccalaureus, S.T.B. from Saint Paul University, Ontario, Canada. His undergraduate studies were completed in Brazil, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in tourism and philosophy.
Because Fr. G will also be associate pastor at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, Bishop Spalding has assigned Fr. Austin Gilstrap to assist with the University Catholic and Cathedral of the Incarnation communities. He will retain his appointment as Director of Vocations and Director of Deacon Formation. During this past semester, Fr. Gilstrap led a men's discernment group in UCat.
“Fr. Gilstrap is well educated and a very calming presence anywhere he goes," says Fr. Fye. "He is capable and friendly, and any time that he is able to commit will benefit our community.”
University Catholic is indebted to Fr. Fye for all he has done to bring the love of Jesus Christ and his Church to the college students at Vanderbilt, Belmont and throughout Nashville in very real and tangible ways. His enthusiasm, high energy and total love of Christ have made him a beloved spiritual father and friend. He will be deeply missed!
