Resettlement
Our Parish has just received its
36th Refugee family to support and accompany through the members of the OLL Refugee Resettlement Ministry, working with the local office of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.
The parents of the Furaga family fled the Republic of the Congo during the Civil War in which thousands were killed. The United Nations placed them in a Refugee Camp in Burundi with their 5 children: 2 boys of 18 and 14; and three girls of 16, 6 and 5. They lived in a tent until the Dad was employed as a Nurses’ Aide by ‘Doctors without Borders’.He was able to save enough money to build his own hut. In neither situation was there running water or electricity. The children fortunately were able to attend school which was provided in their languages of French and BisSwahili.
We picked up the family at the airport. When they arrived at their three bedroom apartment, the Afghan Muslim family we accompanied last year, greeted them from their apartment next door.
Ministry members solicited furniture and articles during last weekend’s Masses and got a
very generous response from our Parishioners. Thank you!
The Ministry members will continue to help the family get to medical and dental appointments, enroll in school, find employment and respond to any other needs.
