Timothy O’Brien was born in Ireland, and immigrated to America, settling in McGregor, Iowa. He served in the Civil War as a sergeant in the 27th Volunteer Iowa Infantry.
After the Civil War he worked for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad as a special agent (railroad policeman) and killed in the line of duty in 1893 in Mason City. He was recently added to the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial Monument, 125 years after he was killed on the job. In May 2019 Timothy was added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC.
During the Civil War, the 27th Iowa Vol. Infantry, assembled in Dubuque, and served all along the Mississippi River. It's first assignment was briefly fighting Indians west of Fr. Snelling (St. Paul, MN), before heading south. They campaigned in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama; through numerous towns and cities including Memphis, Nashville, Vicksburg, New Orleans, Mobile, and Montgomery. By the end of the war, the 27th Iowa had marched 3,000 miles, and traveled 10,000 miles by railroad and steamboat before returning to Clinton, Iowa.
