St. Paul tells us, “For freedom Christ has set us free” (Gal 5:1). In today’s reading, Paul helps us to understand what he means by freedom. It’s easy to confuse freedom with license – that is, to take freedom to mean that I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. This is what Paul means by “an opportunity for the flesh.” It’s not that the flesh is bad or that its every desire is wrong. God made us with bodies, minds, and feelings. The desires of the body or our thoughts or our feelings can be directed toward good or away from the good. Am I orienting my desires, thoughts and feelings for my own satisfaction alone, or as an expression of God’s own love for creation and, especially, other human beings? The freedom that God gives is the freedom to choose. Do I choose to move toward life, which is in Christ and reveals God’s self-giving love? Or will I choose to move toward death, which is to cooperate with my own enslavement? It is in these choices that we claim – or reject – the freedom we are promised in Christ.
For further reflection: All through Romans 6, Paul talks about what it means to be enslaved to sin, which leads to death, or to live “under grace,” the “obedience that leads to righteousness.” Where in your life do you struggle to live in freedom? Are there desires, thoughts, or feelings that leave you feeling enslaved to sin? In your prayer this week, ask God to show you how you might experience greater freedom. Can you accept the free and radical, undeserved gift of grace that leads to abundant life? If this belonged to you, how could you then live?
