Parish Weekly Update -- July 12, 2019Dear Parishioners of St. Joseph,
I left for a couple days last week for the 4th of July, so I didn't get a Weekly update published. I wanted to offer a big thank you to all of you for your support since I've arrived here in January and now again since July 1. For these last couple of weeks, the transition has been almost entirely seamless and I am very happy, excited, humbled, and grateful to be your pastor. I am looking forward to working with all of you as we move into the future.
Steubenville ConferencePlease keep the youth of our parish in your prayers as they travel to Atlanta for a Steubenville Conference. Thank you very much to Dcn. Jeff Artigues and Dianna Janus for traveling with them and chaperoning.
Religious Ed Sign upBeginning this weekend, the registration forms will be in the back of the church for our parish religious education program.
Anointing of the SickA number of parishioners have been asking that we make the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick available in a public way. So next Friday, we'll make the sacrament available at the noon Mass next Friday, July 19. We might ask, "Who can receive the sacrament?" In a nutshell, the sacrament of the sick is for those who are sick, elderly, or anyone about to undergo a serious operation. For more information check out the Catechism, paragraphs
1514 and 1515.If you or someone you know is in need of the sacrament and you're not able to come to Mass, call me at the office or send me an email. I'll be happy to arrange something with you. The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing and is often best coupled with the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. In the Anointing of the Sick our venial sins are forgiven, like the Eucharist, but the Sacrament of Penance is needed for the weightier sins.
Food PantryTomorrow, the St. Joseph Food Pantry is open from 9 until 11 AM and we are always in need of volunteers. If you've got some extra time, contact Joe Schmidt or come on out to the Parish Hall to lend a hand.
Coffee and DonutsCome get some donuts with us after the 9 am Mass on Sunday. Thanks to the Parish Care Committee for organizing this and getting us all together for a little communio.
Knights of Columbus Grill RaffleThe Knights of Columbus are raffling off an Oklahoma Joe Longhorn Triple-function combo tailgate grill. Tickets are $5.00. They're selling tickets after the weekend Masses. Make sure you get a ticket for a chance to win.
Gondolier supports our ChurchGondolier Italian Restaurant and Pizza supports the churches in the Starkville community with their Church Support Cards! If you are planning to eat at Gondolier, please take a card from the gathering space table and present it to your server at the time of your meal, and they will donate back 10% of the purchase price of your meal to St. Joseph. It is a wonderful way to support a local business and our parish at the same time!
Credit Cards for Online GivingI also wanted to remind everyone that we are now able to take credit cards at our online giving website with Our Sunday Visitor.
To use you credit card, log into our online giving page by going to our website and clicking "Donate" or using this link:
https://osvonlinegiving.com/592. Sign in, then go to Manage My Account > My Payment Methods. Then on the right side of the screen it should say "Add New Method" then underneath that, "Add New Credit Card."
Free PianoThat's right FREE! No charge. It's yours. First come, first served. We have a Piano that we are offering to anyone for free
as long as you can come and haul it off. I am told it is "untunable." Hence, it's free, but it might make a great garden piece -- folk art. Send me an email if you or anyone you know is interested.
Minutes to the Pastoral Council MeetingI've attached the minutes from the last Parish Pastoral Council to this email as well. Check it out below.
Office ManagerThe application deadline has come and gone. We have eight applicants. In the coming weeks we will be reviewing the applications and hopefully hiring someone very soon.
Parish RegistrationWe have a new Parish Registration Form. If you're not registered you can fill this out and drop it in the collection, email it back to me or the Office Manager at office@stjosephstarkville.org. You can also register as a parishioner at our website:
www.stjosephstarkville.org. If you are interested in any of the volunteer opportunities listed on the back of the registration form, please email me.
Spiritual Growth Opportunity!RIP: Rescuing Inhabitants of PurgatorySpeaking of ways to get involved. Laura Damm and some others are beginning a new prayer group at St. Joseph. It taps into our rich Catholic tradition of praying for the dead. Come learn a little more next week at the kickoff.
Are you interested in gaining friends in Heaven? The Church encourages us to pray for the souls of the deceased who are suffering in purgatory. Those who are released become your dearest, sincerest, and best friends forever. To learn more, please attend the inaugural meeting of the Rescuing Inhabitants of Purgatory (RIP) team on July 21, 1:00 in the Parish Center.
Grand Jury/InvestigationI just wanted to offer a reminder to everyone to remain patient and continue to pray for all involved in this ongoing investigation -- Fr. Lenin, the Bishop, the diocese, the witnesses, the investigators, and especially the people of our parish. There doesn't appear to be anything new in the development of this situation. I'm sure there is still a lot of frustration and anger on every level and many of us wish this were completed by now. However, we are given an opportunity to do what we are called to do and serve God in the present moment and offer Him our prayers, our sufferings, and do our best to grow in virtue.
Peace,
Fr. Jason Johnston
