About Our Catechetical School: The mission of the Denver Catholic Catechetical School is to place people in contact and communion with the Person of Christ, who alone leads us to the heart of the Father in the Spirit – in essence, making and maturing disciples.
We do this through a prayerful, organic, and systematic presentation of the Catholic Faith, contained both in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition (Catechism of the Catholic Church 80-82). This occurs in a setting that takes advantage of all the facets of effective adult learning: engaging lectures, small group dynamics, independent study, and personal application.
In the Word
“'And who is my neighbor?'”
-
Luke 10:29
Samaritans were hated by the Jews of Jesus’ day. They weren’t pagans, like the Romans. Rather, they believed in the God of the Jews, but the history and religious practice of the two groups diverged during the time of the exile to Babylon (c. 587-538 B.C.). The relationship between Jew and Samaritan was less like that between a Catholic and a Buddhist or an atheist, and more like that between a Catholic and a Protestant – an enmity between brothers.
Maybe this is why Jesus uses a Samaritan as his exemplar of one who is obedient to the Great Commandment. Like the scholar of the law who approaches Jesus, we too want to justify ourselves (v. 29). We look at the fine details of our belief and practice, our reading and keeping of the law, and we judge ourselves righteous.
Jesus, does not discount the finer points of the law; he says he has not come to abolish nor to change a letter or part of a letter of the law until all is fulfilled (Mt 5:17-18). However, Jesus ever reminds us that our practice of obedience is empty without love – St. Paul’s resounding gong and clashing symbol (1 Cor 13:1). We can, like the Levite and the priest in the parable, believe the right things and perform the right rituals, but if we do not care for the wounded with the sacrificial love of the Lord, it is we who will be judged, not justified.
For further reflection: Who is my neighbor? By Jesus’ definition, the neighbor is the one who shows mercy, even when it’s inconvenient. Even when it costs us. Even when it might make us feel unclean, like a Levite or a priest who comes in contact with a dead body. Even when the one who needs mercy is someone we’ve learned to hate. Jesus is uncompromising. Do we dare to ask him as we pray this week, Who is my neighbor?
