Dear Friend,
A sobering grief has hit our country this weekend as two mass shootings claimed the lives of innocent people once again. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families, and the communities impacted by the shootings in El Paso and Dayton.
We would encourage all parishioners to be a part of the solution in preventing such senseless violence in the future by taking action especially through our political process. In our country, we cherish that our politics are not dictated by a singular religious entity but that value deserves some clarification. The separation of Church an State does not mean there is a lack of a political consequences to our faith. The principles we hold as Catholics should motivate us to act in the political realm
(each following the dictates of their own conscience) in order to find solutions to the complex problems of our society.
The teaching authority of our Church provides us with core principles known as "Catholic Social Teaching." You can learn more about these teachings at the USCCB website
found here. In the face of such tragedies as we have seen in El Paso and Dayton, it is helpful to take a look at these and once again remind ourselves that we have an obligation to act through our political and social systems to find solution that promote the welfare of all people, especially the innocent. Please pray that we may all find the courage to change what we can so that all may enjoy health and prosperity.
