August is all about Back to School for the families of our parish as we eagerly await new classes, new teachers and fall sports. We shop for school supplies, buy some new clothes and do our best to set our children up for a successful school year. It is a busy time of year as we wrap up summer activities and prepare to launch the coming school year.
It may surprise you to learn that August and September are the busiest months for the St. Vincent de Paul Conference of Saint Bernadette. The number of requests for assistance we receive at the start of the school year easily surpasses the number of requests we receive during the Christmas season. The cost of back to school overwhelms some families in our community, and they need temporary help with their bills.
Our conference is ready to take the calls and provide assistance where we can so that every child in our area has the school supplies they need and maybe even some new clothes to start the school year off right. We do this with your continued financial support and thank you for your commitment to serving those in need in our community.
The St. Vincent DePaul Conference of Saint Bernadette would like to thank our parishioners for their donations which totaled $1,020 for the month of July. During that same period, we spent $1,445 assisting those in need with rent and utilities.
We do have a small reserve for those months when our expenses exceed our donations but it’s your continued support that sustains our mission and makes ALL of the difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community. The Conference can only give what it receives so it’s only with the generosity of our parishioners that we can create such a positive impact in people’s lives.
We are also very grateful to those that have made donations to the poor box for lighting candles in our Church as these monies are also given to The St. Vincent De Paul Conference of Saint Bernadette.
Vincentian Meditation on the Gospel
“We as followers of St. Vincent must not forget the emphasis which he put on the virtue of simplicity. Simplicity is speaking and acting always with God alone in view. God is touching our lives at every moment of the day, and we are touching Him. He is particularly close to us in the Church, in the Sacraments and in the poor. If we wish to be sensitive to the presence of God in our lives, we have to recall His presence frequently. We have to give ourselves moments of stillness and reflection in the midst of our work and our lives, so that we can become more conscious that it is in God that we live and move and have our being at all times.” (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p. 427)
How have you learned that life does not consist of possessions but in knowing that it is in God that we live and move and have our being?
