Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wis 9:13-18b
Phmn 9-10, 12-17
Lk 14:25-33
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus lays out a pretty clear path to discipleship: renounce your worldly possessions, plan like an architect, and prepare to battle with king-like strategy. This definition may be clear, but it is certainly daunting! Humans tend to seek a life of ease, and discipleship is anything but easy!! Jesus wants us to understand that discipleship does not lead to worldly fame and glory, and it will likely cost us everything that is dear to us. Being a true missionary disciple is so much more than simply being a follower of Jesus. Most of us will hesitate to leave everything behind in order to pick up our crosses in a true act of discipleship. Stewardship is so much more than writing a check or signing up for a ministry! It requires loyalty, sacrifice, perseverance, and faith in God.
