This weekend the Church celebrates 2 feast days: the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Sept. 14 and Our Lady of Sorrows on Sept. 15.
St. Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, traveled to Jerusalem in the 4th century and tore down a pagan temple that was built over the site of Christ’s tomb. When the area was excavated, workers found three crosses. According to legend, one cross, the True Cross of Christ, miraculously healed a dying woman. The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, September 14, celebrates the dedication day of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher, which was built by Constantine.
The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows follows and is paired with the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. While many people only think of the suffering Mary endured during Jesus’ Passion and death, the Seven Sorrows of Mary comprise her lifetime. In art, Our Lady of Sorrows is depicted with seven swords piercing her heart.
