Happy Friday and GO HAWKS!
Here's what we've done this week:
Reading:
* vocabulary
* leveled readers
* short a words
* rhyming
* verbs
* sight words
* Almost every day, students write in their journals about a topic that has been provided. I do try to make sure that I date the entry and include the topic. There may be a few without those details from when I was gone and Mr. McBride was the substitute teacher. Students are working on expressing their ideas, spelling, handwriting, spacing, using punctuation, and using capital letters.
Math:
* took chapter 1 addition math test and students overall scored very well
* started subtraction
* used the board for subtraction activities
* reviewed addition with flash card activity in small group
* began learning subtraction facts in small group
* we have a good balance of whole group, small group instruction as well as using manipulatives as tools to help solve problems
Science:
* planted rye grass and alfalfa seeds
* made observations of leaves and grass
Art:
* traced leaves and used thicker water color paint to paint around the leaves
* mixed colors
* used markers to decorate coffee filters and used water to watch the effects of the colors running together to change their design
FAST Testing:
* students have begun the fall assessment for FAST (Formative Assessment System for Teachers) in sight words, nonsense words, phoneme blending, fluency, and comprehension
* we will be working on this through the first part of October
Next Week: Snack is Jacob Canales Reading:
- We will be having a spelling pretest
- Students who spell all the words correctly will NOT have to take the post-test
- We will be working on short e words, rhyming, and categorization
- Adjectives
- Vocabulary
- Sight words
- Leveled readers
- There will be a unit 1 lesson 4 end of the week reading test on Friday
Math:
- We will be working on subtraction.
Science:
- We will observe and note how our seeds are doing.
- We will “mow” the lawns (trim their plants).
- We will learn about how seeds travel and what plants need to grow.
FAST Testing:
- This will continue throughout September into October.

Library is on Tuesday so students should bring their library books back on or by Tuesday.
