Jesus loved us so much that He died for our sins. He also promised to be with us in a real and tangible way through the Eucharist. At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the Eucharist and asked His apostles to continue this sacrament "in remembrance" of Him, each time we celebrate the Mass. The Eucharist is truly a gift and is the most frequent reason people return to their faith.
However, it is quite evident that we as a society and - dare we say? - as a Church have been forgetting the value of this gift. A
recent survey by the Pew Research (a non-religious based firm) has indicated that only a third of Catholics believe that the Eucharist is truly and substantially the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. Of course, it is important to understand the nuances of the survey such as the percentages among regular churchgoers vs. others, the respondents' understanding of the concept of "
transubstantiation", etc. Still, it indicates that the Church has her work cut out for her in improving this common understanding and how to properly catechize this truth.
