Dear friends in Christ,
This, That & the Other ... Our Gospel on this 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time starts ominously: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dines sumptuously each day.” Uh-oh. As soon as you hear that description you know that this is not going to end well for the rich man. It’s at that point that we can begin to tune out, thinking, “Well, I’m not that rich and my meals are not so sumptuous, so this doesn’t really pertain to me.” But we do so at our own peril. Jesus reminding us to not neglect those most in need around us. If we are blind to the poor or deaf to the prophets, we will also be blind and deaf to Christ. ... You have likely seen some scaffolding and large lifts around the church the past few weeks. Throughout September we’ve had contractors on campus working to eradicate some nagging leaks in the church. This has been an ongoing issue for several years, and has been a real conundrum to nail down and repair. After a few small patch jobs here and there, we’ve embarked on some fairly extensive repairs that (hopefully) will resolve the leaks and get us water-tight once again. As you might imagine with a roof as large and multi-layered as ours, there are all manner of places where water can infiltrate and from there it’s only a matter of time before gravity takes over and it finds it way down to the floor. Most of these have relatively minor, but they do cause damage and are unsightly and so we are working to resolve them. Thank you for your patience as we do so. ... We’ll celebrate our 11th anniversary in the church this November and as it ages it continues to be a source of beauty and wonder despite the many “little things” that need attention. My thanks to Deacon Kerry Bourque, our Parish Administrator, and our fine facilities staff who keep it humming along. ... Thank you to all who generously supported Bishop Robert Camelli, OFM, from Honduras who was with us last week for the annual Missionary Appeal of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Bishop Camelli asked that I convey his sincere appreciation for your warm reception of him and for your gifts in the second collection. More than $23,000 was raised to support the work of his Diocese of Comayauga, Honduras. If you’d still like to drop off a gift, you can do so in the parish office and we’ll make sure it gets added to the collection that we are sending to him. Thank you again. ... A reminder to our parents of Confirmation I (first year) students: There's an important meeting for you this Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. in the Youth Suite on the 2nd floor of the RAC. Last week there was a meeting for Confirmation II parents, i.e., those in 2nd year, but this week's meeting is specifically for those parents with teens (mainly freshmen) who are in Confirmation I. It’ll be about an hour in length and enable you to finish in time to join us for the 5 p.m. Mass. Our Confirmation team has lots of important information to share with you so please attend so that we can work with you to help prepare your child for this most important sacrament. ... I know we are not yet out of September, but I want to call your attention to a big event on the horizon for November. Please reserve Saturday, Nov. 9 for our 6th annual Chili Cook-off. This has quickly become one of the “must-do” events in the parish in the fall. It’s a great night of chili, drinks, music, live and silent auctions, and fun for the whole family. It takes places on our back parking lot and is not to be missed. I encourage you to get your tickets in advance as space is limited and make plans to join us. Cook teams are also encourage to register to compete. We’ve got some great chefs out there who really go all out on their chili and competition is fierce. You can sample it all and so much more by joining us on Nov. 9. Tickets and team registration information available at this link. ... Lastly, remember our annual
CtR Golf Tournament is just a two weeks away on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 14 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club. Entry fee is only $125 and we have room for foursomes and single players. It includes lunch and dinner and plenty of fun along the way. Our
Knights of Columbus do a great job of hosting it each year and proceeds go to benefit CAM and youth scholarships from the parish. See this
link for more information and to register. ... The Knights will also have their
tamales for sale this weekend after all masses, and we'll have Coffee and Donuts available on Sunday morning, too, courtesy of our Vocations Committee. If you haven't yet registered vote, you can do so as well at Coffee and Donuts. ... Lastly, and most importantly,
God loves you. See ya’ at Mass!
