In the Word
Moses's
hands, however, grew tired;
so
they put a rock in place for him to sit on.
Meanwhile
Aaron and Hur supported his hands,
one
on one side and one on the other.
- Exodus 17:12
Faithfulness can be exhausting. We want to serve God and God’s people, but we grow weary. Today’s passage from Exodus describes how, as long as Moses held the staff of God aloft, the Israelites, under Joshua’s leadership, were able to beat back their enemies. But Moses grew tired.
How often do we feel this weariness of body and spirit as we endeavor to do the Lord’s work for the sake of those we care about? Few of us are supporting troops in battle, but many of us are shepherding families or serving those in need, working to earn a living and volunteering for the church or our community at large. We grow tired.
For further reflection:
Consider this week what you expect of yourself. How do you feel about asking for help when you need it? Hesitant? Eager? Uneasy? Ashamed? What does the example of Moses, Aaron, and Hur suggest to you about God’s expectations?
