St.Teresa is a Doctor of the Church. She reformed the Carmelites and founded new monasteries. Her writings, such as The Interior Castle and the Way of Perfection, have been an inspiration to many. Her prayer life and great wisdom about prayer can be an inspiration to us all. For many years she greatly struggled with prayer. When she was 41 a priest convinced her to go back to prayer, which she found very difficult. She wrote, "I was more anxious for the house of prayer to be over than I was to remain there. I don't know what heavy penance I would not have gladly undertaken rather than practice prayer." Through God's grace she grew immensely in her prayer life. She wrote, "For mental prayer in my opinion is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with Him who we know loves us. The important thing is not to think much but to love much and so do that which best stirs you to love. Love is not great delight but desire to please God in everything."
A short prayer from St. Teresa of Avila:
Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.
