Wings of the Soul
Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah... because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here. (Luke 11:29-32b)
Jesus is the Son of God. He comes before us today speaking in words and sacraments. “Oh, that today you would hear his voice: Do not harden your hearts. (Psalm 95:7-8) He calls us all to repentance. As St. John Henry Newman who was canonized yesterday said, “Prayer and fasting have been called the wings of the soul, and they who neither fast nor pray cannot follow Christ. They cannot lift up their hearts. Great, then, is the contrast between the many and those holy and blessed souls who rise with Christ and set their affection on things above. The one are in light and peace, the others are hurrying along the broad way "which leads to destruction" (Mt 7:13). (St. John Henry Newman, Rising with Christ) May our prayers and acts of penance today unite with the sacrifice of Our Crucified Lord for the atonement of our sins and the sins of the world.
A Daily Prayer
by St. John Henry Newman
May He support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last.
Hail Mary full of grace…
St John Henry Newman, Pray for us.
Peace in Christ,
