Musicians, the Curious, and the Christmas regiment, Singers AND Instruments,Please read this carefully and thoroughly!
The Master Advent/Christmas Calendar and Special Music compilation are attached to this email.
Please follow this calendar very carefully...you may not be able to predict subtle changes in the day or time you are used to rehearsing!
This communication is functioning two ways:
- To decide which Mass you wish to sing, and
- To sign-up for solos, etc., especially in the preludes, if desired.
- You do NOT have to be a choir member to participate!
- You are free to sing ANY Mass you want, as long as you meet the criteria.
- You are encouraged to sing more than one Mass on Christmas Eve.
What follows are the Masses, singing groups (unofficially) and eligibility requirements for Christmas Eve:
4:00 PM - Children's Mass Junior Choir, and all children Grades 2 - 8
Children younger than Grade 2 may participate in the Christmas Pageant at this Mass; call the parish office if interested
6:00 PM - Contemporary Mass Unofficially for Youth Band, Grade 7 to College Age
12:00 AM - Midnight Mass Unofficially Schola, Grade 7-Adult
My hope is to have special music or other presentations ONE HALF HOUR before EACH MASS. It is time to decide if God is calling you! Remember, you need NOT be a cantor:
- To provide special music during the prelude for the Christmas Mass(es) of your choosing. This includes vocal solo, instrumental, or small group and/or
- To sing the psalm and other special music during the liturgy.
We are looking to program prelude music for these Masses:
4:00 PM Children’s Mass – Prelude begins at 3:30, and will present a special Christmas pageant around 3:50; so we need cantors for prelude and Mass!
6:00 PM Contemporary Mass – Prelude to begin 20-30 minutes prior to mass (will depend on the length of the 4:00 PM Children’s Mass)
12:00 AM Midnight Mass – Prelude to begin 30 minute prior to mass.
Please, do not assume if you sang last year I will automatically schedule your piece. Please request it again. Please note, in the past, I would give you right of first refusal if you sang that piece a previous year; however, for this year, we will try to level the playing field and give all folks a chance, especially for the real popular pieces.
Try to let me know soon, as there are factors I need to consider.
I am attaching a LONG list of approved Christmas titles from which to choose. Make sure you look at BOTH pages.
You do not need to pick something off the list. We will avoid doing prelude music that is to be used in the liturgy, like Silent Night. When in doubt, ask.
When selecting special music, be realistic, making sure that the piece is in your range and demonstrates the very best you are able to sing. Not all pieces work for everyone. In rare cases, I may intervene and help you find the selection that is the most appropriate for you. Sometimes folks have asked me to pick something for them. That is no problem!
I may need you to provide sheet music, etc. for me to make sure we're in the right key, correct arrangement, and form.
When you respond to this communication, make sure you let me know at which Mass(es) you will sing or play.
Folks, it is pretty much first come first serve from here. I can't wait to hear your ideas. Please do not be afraid to ask questions or make requests.
If you cannot view or download the attachments, please let me know.
Let's try to have this in place and ready to go by December 1, 2019.
Thanks,
