Dear Parents and Family,
Our EDGE night tonight was titled, "Respect." We played a fun and upbeat game called “steal the bacon.” Deacon Dave shared with our middle schoolers about the 7th commandment, specifically how it calls us to have a proper, respectful attitude and use of material things and each other. In small group, the youth discussed what possession is of greatest value to them and how they can share that belonging with others. We concluded with a beautiful introduction to Adoration and an explanatory teaching from Deacon Andy Cirmo. Have a blessed week!
Main Ideas:
Everyone has the right to own personal property, but the 7th commandment warns us to use what we have for good, not to steal other's belongings.
We are called to use what we own, first and foremost, for the good of human beings, especially the poor, and for the betterment of society.
Learning how to be generous and respect the property of others will help us grow in virtue and serve our neighbors as Christ asks us to.
Catechism Reference:“The 7th commandment forbids unjustly taking or keeping the goods of one’s neighbor and wronging him in any way with respect to his goods. It commands justice and charity in the care of earthly goods and the fruits of men’s labor. For the sake of the common good, it requires respect for the universal destination of goods and respect for the right to private property. Christian life strives to order this world’s goods to God and to fraternal charity.” (CCC 2401)
Scripture Reference:
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
Family Reflection Questions:
What does it mean to show respect to others and their possessions?
What item is of greatest value to you?
What is one way you can share that belonging with others?
What did you think of your time with Jesus in Adoration and how He gives of Himself to us in this beautiful way?
