Fr. Godfrey's Homily
Advent 2A 2019
St. Benedict Cathedral
Surely she said it at least five times a week. “How many times do I have to say it?” It didn’t matter what Mom was asking us to do. Unfortunately, it didn’t usually lead to action on our part right away. So, “How many times do I have to say it?” And clearly, it was more than it had already been said!
This may have been the first time that the Pharisees and Sadducees heard the call to repentance. John is the voice in the wilderness calling them to change. As we well know, many calls to repentance, to conversion, to a new way of living – none of it, even from Jesus, seems capable of breaking their spirit hell-bent against change.
And how about for us? We hear EVERY WEEK how we are to live and we hear it from Jesus Himself in the scriptures. Do we make a quick break for holiness? Or hold on to our favorite sins, just in case Jesus might be mistaken? Jesus is persistent with us in His call. Let’s become more persistent ourselves in prayer this Advent season as we ask for the true spirit of conversion.
As an example of that persistence in prayer, let’s sing a line we all know: “Open my heart, Lord.” Let’s sing it several times together. Maybe we’ll hear Christ if we ask Him to open our hearts. God is always persistent. We must be too!
